  3. Does my SharePoint web site include search functionality?
Yes. Windows SharePoint Services includes a extremely powerful text-based search feature that helps you search for documents and information fast.

  4. What kind of documents can be posted to my SharePoint web site?
You can post documents of many types to your SharePoint site including .pdf, .htm, .doc, and many more. When you save a document to your SharePoint site, an icon is automatically placed next to the document that tells the user what type of document it is. If you have Microsoft Office XP or higher, you can save documents directly to your Windows SharePoint Services web site.

  5. How do I customize my SharePoint web site?
SharePoint includes tools that let you create custom lists, calendars, page views, and the like. To fully customize your site, you can use Microsoft FrontPage 2003. Specifically, you can use FrontPage Themes and shared borders, and also use FrontPage to create photo galleries and top ten lists, utilize standard usage reports, and integrate automatic Web content.

  6. How long does it take to set up my SharePoint web site?
It only takes a few minutes to create a complete SharePoint web site. When you finish the online purchase, you will receive an email shortly after that contains your user name and password. The email will also contain a link to your new SharePoint web site. The first time you logon to your SharePoint web site, you will be asked to select a template. After you select a template, your new SharePoint web site is complete. Preformatted forms let you and your members contribute to the site by filling out lists. Standard forms include Announcements, Tasks, Surveys, Discussions, and Links.

  7. Can I create customized templates for my SharePoint web site?
Yes. You can have templates for Business Plans, Doctors Office, Lawyers Office etc.

  8. How do I make my site public? By default, all SharePoint sites are private.
If you want your site to be a public web site, enable anonymous access for the entire site. Then you can give out your URL to anybody in your business card, e-mail or any other marketing material.

If you want your site to have anonymous access enabled (i.e., you want to treat it like any other web site on the Internet that does not ask you to provide a user name and password to see the content of the site), follow these simple steps:

    1. Login as an administrator
    2. Click on site settings
    3. Click on Go to Site Administration
    4. Click on Manage anonymous access
    5. Choose one of the three conditions on what Anonymous users can access:
         a. Entire Web site
         b. Lists and libraries
         c. Nothing

Default condition is nothing; your site has restricted access. The default conditions allow you to create a secure site for your web site.

  9. What is a Sub-Site, how do they work?
Sub-sites are used when you want to create a separate SharePoint site under your parent site. These sites can have their own permissions assigned to them, or they can inherit permissions from the parent site. You can create a sub-site for various categories. For example:

    Departments - finance, marketing, IT
    Products - electrical, mechanical, hydraulics
Projects - Trey Research, Department of Transportation, FDA
Team - Retention team, BPR team
Clients - new clients, old clients
    Suppliers - Supplier 1, Supplier 2, Supplier 3
    Customers - Customer A, Customer B, Customer C
    Real estate - property A, property B

The URLs for each sub site will be, for example:
    http://wss.icscentral.com/yoursitename/finance
    http://wss.icscentral.com/yoursitename/marketing
or, if you select to use a personalized URL for you site.
    http://www.mydomain/finance
    http://www.mydomain/marketing

You can keep track of permissions for each team separately so that access is restricted while maintaining global access to the parent site.

  10. How do I make my SharePoint site non-restricted?
If you want your site to have anonymous access enabled (i.e., you want to treat it like any other web site on the Internet that does not ask you to provide a user name and password to see the content of the site), follow these simple steps:

    1. Login as an administrator
    2. Click on site settings
    3. Click on Go to Site Administration
    4. Click on Manage anonymous access
    5. Choose one of the three conditions on what Anonymous users can access:
         a. Entire Web site
         b. Lists and libraries
         c. Nothing

Default condition is nothing; your site has restricted access. The default conditions allow you to create a secure site for your web site.

  11. Can I get my own domain name for my SharePoint web site?
Yes. You can get your own Domain Name for your SharePoint web site. During the online setup process you will be asked what type of URL you want to associate with your Windows SharePoint Web site. If you choose to use your own domain name, there are a few step you must complete before our system can setup your site. Please click here for more information about using a personalized URL.

  12. What are picture libraries?
Picture libraries allow you to access a photo album and view it as a slide show, thumbnails, or a film strip. You can have separate folders for each event, category, etc.

  13. How do I invite users to my SharePoint web site? Is this secure?
SharePoint-based Web sites can be password-protected to restrict access to registered users, who are invited to join via e-mail. In addition, the site administrator can restrict certain members' roles by assigning different permission levels to view, post, and edit.

  14. How do I get additional help on the functionality of Windows SharePoint Services
You can get additional help at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/technologies/sharepoint/default.mspx
